The standard applied

This website targets conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at Level AA. VenSoc believes the site substantially conforms, with the known exceptions listed below.

Accessibility here is treated as an engineering property with tests behind it, not as a statement written at launch and never revisited. Both are compliance artefacts; only one of them stays true after the next deployment.

How conformance is enforced

Four automated gates run against this site. Any of them failing stops the release.

Colour contrast, both themes

Every semantic colour pair is resolved through its variable chain and checked against the WCAG 2.1 contrast thresholds, on every surface — page background, raised panels and sunken panels — in both light and dark mode. Sixty-four pairs are currently asserted. This gate caught four real failures on its first run, including an inverted panel at 1.9:1.

Automated rule scanning

Every route is scanned with axe-core in a real browser, in light mode, dark mode and at mobile viewport size, as part of the test suite.

Keyboard operation

The skip link, the navigation, the theme control and the contact form are tested for keyboard reachability and focus movement. This caught a defect automated scanning missed: the skip link scrolled the page without moving focus, because the main landmark was not focusable.

Structure

Every page is asserted to have exactly one first-level heading and a heading order that does not skip levels, so that navigating by headings works.

What automated testing does not cover

Automated tools reliably detect a minority of accessibility barriers. They cannot judge whether link text makes sense out of context, whether an error message is actually helpful, whether reading order matches visual order in a complex layout, or whether alternative text conveys the right meaning.

These are reviewed manually as pages are built. VenSoc does not claim this site has been through a formal independent audit or user testing with assistive technology users, because it has not. Saying so is more useful than an unqualified conformance claim.

Known limitations

The logotype uses the brand grey at its original value, which does not meet text contrast thresholds. WCAG explicitly exempts logotypes, and the secondary line of the wordmark is rendered in a darkened same-hue neutral so that it remains readable at header size.

Decorative hairline rules between blocks of content are not contrast-checked, because they are not boundaries needed to identify a component. Any border on an input, control or clickable card uses a token that is checked.
